The Investors Group Hockey Alberta Provincials are wrapping up at the start of April and so far they have been a great success.
Hockey Alberta would like to thank all the Volunteers and Host Committees for putting in countless hours, ensuring their events far exceeded expectations. Congratulations go out to all the players, coaches and officials who participated in the Provincial Tournaments, especially the teams who went home with championship banners.
Now that March Madness is in the books, the victorious teams in the Bantam AAA, Midget AAA, Midget AAA Female Junior A, Senior Female and Senior AAA categories will compete for their respective regional and national titles throughout the month of April. The different series and tournaments will be held across Canada with Alberta hosting several of the main events.
This year, Alberta will play host to the McKenzie Cup, which is the Senior AAA Western Regional Championship. The five-game series takes place from April 2 to 6, 2009 with the teams and host location still to be determined.
The 2009 ESSO Cup will be held in Calgary from April 19 to 25, 2009 at the Max Bell Arena. The six-day affair will feature the top Midget Female teams from across the country. Calgary will also host the Canadian Western Shield Senior Female Hockey Championship from April 2 to 6, 2009. The tournament games will be spilt between the Brentwood Sportsplex and the Cardel Place arenas.
During the month of March, over 1000 male hockey players have been competing to earn a roster spot to represent their zone in the Alberta Cup. The tournament features eight zone teams made up of 20 ’94-born players. The 2009 Alberta Cup will be held in Calgary from April 22 to 26 at the Don Hartman NE Sportsplex. At the end of the tournament selected athletes will be eligible for the Team Alberta Program, which leads to the U-16 Male Provincial Camp. The Female version of the Alberta Cup, The Team Alberta Challenge, will take place at the start of May in Wetaskiwin. For more information please visit www.hockeyalberta.ca |
