Source for Sports Play SMART Jamborees It’s a day spent with local hockey heroes both on and off the ice. These hockey stars teach the stars of tomorrow puck control, skating techniques and of course the most important thing, how to have fun.
The goal of a Jamboree is for seven and eight year old novice players to learn about Playing SMART (Shaping Minds, Attitudes and Respect Together). It’s about creating new friendships and making the game fun. Parents are also tasked with taking a classroom session where they learn how to be “SMART” parents which includes respecting officials and coaches.
“It’s always great to see how much the kids learn and see how much they really enjoy themselves when the emphasis is truly put on having fun,” said Drew Dixon, coordinator of player development, Hockey Alberta. “Getting to work with new coaches, different players and taking part in both on and off ice activities usually results in a day that most players will remember for quite some time.”

Pee Wee Skills Challenge The Program is designed to promote skill development and awareness by using skill tests as a measurement for players’ individual skill improvement throughout the hockey season. Each of the Zone Final leads to the Provincial Final Pee Wee Skills Challenge.
For the Peewee Skills Challenge, only one host site will be selected in each of the nine zones. From each of these Zone Finals, select players will be chosen to attend either the North or South Zone Provincial Finals where they will have to chance to suit up with either the Calgary Flames or the Edmonton Oilers.
“Playing in an NHL arena alongside NHL superstars is a dream come true for most of these players,” said Drew Dixon, coordinator of player development, Hockey Alberta. “The healthy competition brought out by the Pee Wee Skills Challenge is rewarding and entertaining not only for the players but the parents, volunteers and spectators as well.”
For hosting information or to register contact Drew Dixon at ddixon@hockeyalberta.caor by phone at (403) 342-6777.

Atom 4 on 4 “Shinny” is the purist form hockey and that is exactly what the Atom 4 on 4 Hockey Festival is all about. This one day event provides an opportunity for Atom aged hockey players to play in an organized shinny hockey festival. There is no score clock, and the ice surface is divided into sections to allow for two games to be played simultaneously. Atom aged players participate in the Festival with no emphasis on who wins and who loses.
“It is a great program to be involved with, one that is not only inexpensive to host but the cost to participate is also reasonable and the rewards, memories and fun the players receive are priceless,” said Danielle Nystrom, coordinator or promotions and events, Hockey Alberta.
“My favorite thing to watch during this event is the socks. You can determine which minor hockey association the players are from. The greatest thing to see is players walking down the hallway, visiting and forming friendships and they are all wearing different socks. You can see the success of the event, just by watching socks,” said Debbie Northcott, Hockey Alberta Zone 8 Manager of Operations.
Those interested in registering, or Minor Hockey Associations interested in hosting an Atom 4 on 4 Festival can contact Danielle Nystrom at dnystrom@hockeyalberta.ca or by phone at (403) 342-6777.
