It’s Alberta’s most elite Bantam hockey tournament and a chance to play in front of an arena packed with scouts, parents and fans. In April, the province’s top 1995-born male hockey players gathered in Leduc to compete for the 2010 Alberta Cup.
The final match-up featured the Northwest Sharks and the Calgary South Flames. It came down to the wire but in the end the Sharks were able to sink its teeth into the Calgary squad clinching the 4-3 victory. Dallas Bozek scored what ended up being the game winning goal at 5:08 of the second period. The Flames made a late charge pulling within one when Johnathon Merkley found the back of the net at 5:10 of the third period to make it 4-3. Northwest netminder, Wyatt Hoflin, stood on his head in the final minutes of the game stopping 32 shots in total.
The Source for Sports Play SMART award was handed out to the Central Thrashers for the good sportsmanship and respect they showed on and off the ice throughout the tournament.
Western Hockey League scouts from across North America took notice to the Alberta talent drafting 92 players from the Alberta Cup at the 2010 Bantam Draft – the most of any western province.
