David proved it to Goliath, Moses to the Red Sea and now the North Seera Kodiaks to Federation Hockey’s Atom Canadians Division.
When it comes down to it, size really doesn’t matter.
Despite being one of the smallest clubs in the region – only 108 players registered for Atom hockey this year – North Seera rolled through the first of three rounds, rattling off a 7-1-0 record in the age group’s top division.
“We’re small organization, but we’ve got some very good development for this group of boys,” said Kodiaks head coach Kelly Readman. “The parents with this group put in a lot of effort into getting them extra ice, getting them into spring hockey and hockey camps and those sorts of things so that helps a lot.”
All that extra work certainly bred big results, but the Kodiaks were hardly alone in their quest for excellence. At press time, the St. Albert AA Lightning were in second place with a 5-1-1 record, while the St. Albert AA Barons sat in third at 5-2-0. Sherwood Park and the Confederation Thrashers were also within striking distance of the top with nine and eight points respectively.
“The division is a lot closer than it was two years ago and we’re not bullet proof,” noted Readman, who coached the same group of players in 2006/07 in the Novice ranks. “We’ve got to keep working hard because now, everyone is going to want to beat us.” |
