CANADA WEST CONFERENCE REPORT - University of Saskatchewan Huskies fourth-year senior goaltender Jeff Harvey is the Canada West Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending January 18th.
Harvey, a product of St. Albert, AB, posted a 2-0 record with a shutout in two starts on the weekend, allowing only one goal on 44 shots in that span, leading the Huskies to two wins over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns. On Friday, January 16th, Harvey stopped all 19 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season as the Huskies posted a 5-0 victory over the Pronghorns, ending Lethbridge’s eight-game win streak. On Saturday, Harvey stopped 24 of 25 shots he faced as the Huskies completed the sweep of the Pronghorns with a 6-1 win. The 6’0”, 180-lb Arts & Sciences student played four seasons in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice, Swift Current Broncos and Everett Silvertips. In other Canada West hockey action on the weekend, the University of Alberta Golden Bears swept a two-game series versus the visiting U.B.C. Thunderbirds. On Friday, former Spokane Chief Derek Ryan scored once and added two assists to lead the Golden Bears to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Thunderbirds. Former WHLer Brennan Sonne notched the lone goal for the T-Birds. On Saturday, former Prince George Cougars netminder Real Cyr stopped all 26 shots he faced while WHL grad Lee Zalasky scored three goals as the Golden Bears blanked the T-Birds 5-0. Also on the weekend, the University of Manitoba Bisons swept a two-game set versus the visiting Regina Cougars. On Friday, WHL grads Mike Hellyer and Mark Olafson each picked up an assist as the Bisons blanked the visiting Cougars 2-0. On Saturday, Hellyer notched a goal and two assists while fellow WHL grad Nick Hotson added two goals as the Bisons skated to a 6-2 win over the Cougars. Former Prince Albert Raider Caine Pearpoint notched a goal and an assist for Regina.
