CALGARY, AB. – The Western Hockey League announced today that forward Colin Long, of the Kelowna Rockets, has been named the HUSKY WHL Player of the Month for March.
The 19-year-old native of Santa Ana, California, recorded 14 points in his last seven regular season games in the month of March, netting three goals and 11 assists all while maintain a plus minus rating of +10. Long ended the 2008-09 WHL regular season on an eight game point scoring streak and for his efforts was named a game Star in three contests through March, including two 1st Star selections.
Long’s consistency helped lead the Rockets to a 7-0 regular season record in the month of March and an overall record of 47-21-1-3 on the season. Kelowna’s strong finish down the stretch, including wins over the Vancouver Giants and Calgary Hitmen, solidified a third place finish in the WHL Western Conference and home ice advantage into the first round of the 2009 WHL Playoffs.
In 68 games played this season Long posted a career high of 33 goals and added 58 assists, good enough for sixth spot among all WHL scorers with 91 points. Now in his fourth year of play with the Kelowna Rockets, the Phoenix Coyotes 4th round Draft pick in 2008 has appeared in 229 WHL contests collecting 223 career points (76 goals, 147 assists).
His accomplishments make Colin Long a deserving choice as the HUSKY WHL Player of the Month for March.
