Everett Silvertips Vice President / General Manager Doug Soetaert revealed Monday that Associate Head Coach Jay Varady has been named to USA Hockey’s coaching staff for the 2010 World Junior Championships, held in Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from December 26, 2009 to January 5, 2010. It will be Varady’s second exposure to international competition after serving as a coach at USA Hockey’s World Junior Evaluation Camp in August, 2008. Varady, 32, will serve as USA Hockey’s Video Coach and will also take part in this year’s evaluation camp, held from August 6 to 15 in Lake Placid, NY. He will operate under Dean Blais, who was appointed as Head Coach of the Under-20 team last month. Also serving on the coaching staff will be John Hynes and Mark Osiecki. A member of the Silvertips' coaching staff since their inaugural season, Varady spent four years as an Assistant Coach with Everett prior to his promotion to Associate Head Coach in May, 2007. Under his guidance, the Silvertips have posted a Western Conference championship and three U.S. Division championships while making the playoffs in each of his six years with the club. Prior to his time in Everett, he served as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Forge, winning the Junior A NAHL National Championship in 2003. The Cahokia, IL native also played three seasons of Division I NCAA hockey with Union College prior to an injury that relocated him to the bench, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2000-01 season. “It’s an honor to represent your country and any time you get the opportunity to do so, you jump at it,” Varady explained. “I look forward to working with Coach Blais and supporting USA Hockey.” USA Hockey opens the tournament against Slovakia on Saturday, December 26 at Saskatoon’s Credit Union Centre. Also competing in Group A with USA Hockey and Slovakia will be Canada, Latvia and Switzerland.
