The Alberta Junior Hockey League suffered a tragic loss in early June with the death of Calgary Canucks defenceman Evan Bayko.
Bayko, a 19-year-old native of Calgary, died on June 6 after suffering an epileptic seizure in his sleep.
In an interview with Jason van Rassel of the Calgary Herald, former Canucks head coach and general manager Don Phelps remembered Bayko as a hard-nosed player.
“He was a very quiet, soft-spoken young man, but a fierce competitor on the ice,” said Phelps in the June 9 edition of the Calgary Herald. “He loved to throw a good bodycheck when he could. He was tough to play against.”
In two years with the Canucks, Bayko put up 16 points and 175 penalty minutes in 80 career AJHL games.
Any donations can be made in Bayko’s name to Epilepsy Canada. |
