It was nearly a clean sweep for Calgary squads at the Hockey Alberta BB Provincial Championships in Edmonton March 14 to 16.
Midnapore Blue and the Glenlake Hawks won championship banners at the Midget 1 and Midget 2 levels respectively, while the Midnapore Saints won the Bantam 1 title and the Lake Bonavista Breakers won the Peewee 2 banner.
Midnapore Blue downed the Edmonton Ketek Thunder by scores of 4-1 and 3-2 to take home the title. Midnapore advanced to the provincials after beating Shaw Meadows to win the Calgary city championship title.
Meanwhile, the Glenlake Hawks beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on March 14 before suffering a 4-2 loss the next day. The Hawks then earned the provincial banner with a 5-2 win in the rubber match. The Hawks earned the provincial berth by virtue of beating the Westside Warriors to capture the city title.
At the Bantam 1 level, the Midnapore Saints won back-to-back 5-2 decisions over the Sherwood Park Trojans 5-2. The Saints downed Southland in the Calgary city finals to advance to provincials.
After losing 5-2 to the Edmonton SWAT Sumos, the Crowchild Chiefs battled back for a 5-1 win in the second game of the series before losing the deciding game by a 6-2 score. The Chiefs advanced to provincials by beating Crowfoot in two games in the city finals.
Finally, the Lake Bonavista Breakers skated to 5-3 and 7-3 wins over the Edmonton Raiders to capture the Peewee 2 title at the BB Provincials. The Breakers ousted the Bow River Bruins in the Calgary city finals to earn the trip to Edmonton for provincials.
Other Midget winners Glenlake squads beat teams from Springbank to capture Calgary city titles in both the Midget 3 and Midget 4 Blue divisions.
The Southside Thunder downed the Shaw Meadows Fighting Tunas to capture the Midget 5 division, while the Properties Chargers beat the Glenlake Hawks in the Midget 6 division.
Bantam champs The Properties Wild beat the Crowfoot Chiefs to capture the Bantam 3 city title, Crowfoot Yellow won two straight games over Seven Clubs to win the Bantam 4 Blue crown, while the Springbank Warriors also needed two games to dispate the PSA Ice in the Bantam 4 Red division final.
The Southland Saints beat the Shaw Meadows Elite in the Bantam 5 final, the Springbank Fighting Gnomes outlasted the Crowfoot Wheat Kings in the Bantam 6 deciding game, while the Lake Bonavista Breakers beat the Springbank Avalanche to capture the Bantam 7 city championship.
Peewee prevailers After finishing sixth in the Peewee 1 Blue Division standings, the Shaw Meadows Rangers made a remarkable run in the playoffs before finally losing to the Simons Valley Outlaws in the championship game.
Despite the 2-1 loss in the city championships, the Rangers still earned an invitation to the Peewee AA Provincial Championships at the Max Bell Centre from March 13 and 16 where they compiled a 2-1-1 record before edging the Sherwood Park Jets 8-7 in overtime to earn a rematch against the Outlaws in the tournament final.
The Lake Bonavista Breakers beat the Bow River Bruins 5-2 in the Peewee 1 Red finals to advance to the BB Provincials in Edmonton.
