Girls Hockey Calgary played host to the Hockey Alberta Bantam Female A Provincial Championships and the host Dinos did their best to keep the title in town.
The Dinos made it all the way to the final on March 16 at East Calgary Twin Arenas before losing 3-2 to the Edmonton Thunder.
“If they were to play again, it could very well be a reverse score,” said tournament committee chairman Sonny Vallieres, who’s also a director with Girls Hockey Calgary.
The Dinos started the tourney with a 3-1 win over the Grande Prairie Thunder on March 14 before being edged 2-1 by the Edmonton Thunder the next morning.
Later that afternoon, the Dinos blanked the Cochrane Rockies 6-0 before skating to a 3-1 win over the Sherwood Park Raiders in semifinal action the next day.
Unfortunately for the Dinos, they came up short in their rematch against the Edmonton Thunder in the final and had to settle for silver.
Earlier, the Dinos captured the city championship with a 2-0 win over the Calgary Trojans, who also qualified for provincials and went 1-1-1 at the tourney.
All in all, Vallieres praised all the players and teams involved with Girls Hockey Calgary for their efforts this season.
“The program continues to get stronger and stronger,” he said. “Overall we’ve done very well.”
Midget A The Calgary Dinos also qualified for the Hockey Alberta Female Midget A Provincial Championships by virtue of their 3-0 win over the Calgary X-Treme in the city championships. “They have an excellent team,” said Vallieres, of the Dinos who will face off against the best Female Midget A teams in the province in Olds between March 28-30. “We’re hoping they’ll do quite well at provincials.”
Midget B The Trojans beat the Rockies 3-1 in the deciding game of the city championships to qualify for the Female Midget B Provincials in Vauxhall from March 27-30.
Bantam B The Rockies edged the Dinos 2-1 to win the city championships and qualify for the Female Bantam B provincials in Irma March 13-16.
The Dinos finished 1-3 at provincials with their lone win coming in their final game, a 2-1 decision over Rocky Mountain House. Lethbridge went on to win the provincial title with an 8-4 decision over Camrose in the final game.
Peewee A The Calgary Rockies downed the X-Treme 3-1 in the city championships and went on to the Female Peewee A provincials in Medicine Hat from March 6-9.
The Rockies finished with a 1-3 record at provincials. Their lone victory was an 8-0 decision over the Okotoks Oilers.
By virtue of their second-place showing in the regular season, the Calgary Cougars also qualified for provincials and finished with a 2-1-1 record. The Cougars beat the Rockies 7-4 in their opening game before blanking Okotoks 4-0. After a 3-0 loss to the Red Deer Chiefs, the Cougars tied the Cochrane Rockies 3-3 to finish just shy of earning a semifinal berth.
Peewee B Despite finishing third in the regular season, the Calgary X-Treme upset the first-place Cougars 2-1 in the deciding game of the city championships.
Although they lost the city title, the Cougars qualified for the Female Peewee B Provincials in Olds from March 27-30 due to their regular-season title.
Atom Southland skated to a 3-1 win over Lake Bonavista to capture the city title.
The win helped avenge a semifinal loss that Southland suffered to Lake Bonavista during Esso Minor Hockey Week. |
