CANUCKS SUPPORT VETERANS For the past two seasons, Trevor Rubak has taken his hockey team down to the Ogden Legion’s Annual Remembrance Day ceremony. This year, with his Calgary Midget AA Canucks out of town on a road trip, Rubak was forced to break the tradition. To make up for their absence, Rubak is now challenging his CNHA Midget AA Canucks players to fundraise some money to be donated to the Veterans Food Bank/Calgary Poppy Fund to help them purchase new wheelchairs, walkers, scooters and other items that will assist some of the Veterans with mobility issues. The Calgary Northstars Hockey Association, Midget AA Canucks, would like to ask for your support in our drive to support the Local Veterans Food Bank. For more information, please visit the Northstars website at www.calgarynorthstars.ca.

SAFETY FIRST FOR COACHES Hockey Calgary extended its thanks to four associations for taking coach safety and initiative to the next level. Crowfoot, PSA, Southland and Springbank have all mandated the use of helmets for every coach, at every level. Last year, there were seven coach fatalities recorded due to coaches hitting their head on the ice. Hockey USA has mandated the use of helmets for all coaches coaching in minor hockey and Hockey Calgary is encouraging all of its coaches to follow suit. The use of helmets by coaches has significant benefits. It shows youth the importance of safety and it also keeps coaches safe. Everyone’s seen a coach and/or instructor fall or be tripped while on the ice. These four associations have taken the initiative and completed due diligence by mandating the use of helmets and Hockey Calgary applauds their decision.
