Concerns over an impending pandemic caused by the H1N1 flu virus has led to some cautionary steps from the Edmonton Minor Hockey Association.
A memo released by the EMHA’s board of directors hit the association’s website Oct. 15 and will be included in all coaches’ bags handed out this season.
It highlighted the need for all participants to use common sense and to take extra care to protect the spread of the virus commonly known as the human swine flu.
While not sanctioned as rules, the memo strongly advised that participants adhere to the following seven steps: • No sharing of water bottles • No sharing of personal items such as soaps, deodorants, towels etc. • Use your elbow to cover a cough or a sneeze • Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds every time
Managers are asked to ensure that arena washrooms are equipped with soap and paper towels. If they aren’t, they should inform the arena staff.
Players should keep their gloves on when shaking hands If you are feeling sick, stay home until you feel better.
The H1N1 virus has claimed 80 lives in Canada since 2008, including eight in Alberta.
